Edzell Castle

Edzell's most unique feature, its walled garden.It was started around 1604. 12 foot high wall with three sets of carved panels located on three of the walls, and this motive of sevenfoldness and threefoldness is reiterated in the sets of three seven-pointed stars in the panels between the carved panels. The seven Cardinal Virtues are depicted on the west wall, the Liberal Arts to the south and the Planetary Deities on the east wall. Beneath each carving is a niche, with an arrangment of eleven recess grouped in three rows in the bays between the carvings.
